Summer Camp 2007 -
Photo Album. Enjoy!
Camp started off in a frenzy of registration. Was it that we did such a great job last year or maybe it was the
beautiful location change to Pine Top Farm in Thomson, Georgia? Who knew, but the registrations came in with a flurry
and we knew we would squeeze in every last rider no matter what magic we had to pull out to get them all there!
Sunday morning several out of state riders had already arrived and as the day progressed 50 more riders and 70 horses
found their respective barns and got settled in. Everything clicked along smoothly without anyone being disappointed
at where they were located. In the evening came the rules and introductions from our very talented staff of trainers
we managed to secure for this year?s camp - Kyle Carter, Mike Winter, Hilda Hick Donahue, and Tiffany Loudon. What
lucky riders they are to have such talent teach them for the week. All riders were charged up and ready for the next
morning, we just hoped the trainers we up to riders enthusiasm! The group this year ranged from Beginner Novice to
Intermediate and all under the age of 19!
Monday began with flatwork and followed by our famous Musical FreeStyle Dressage competition. Three arenas danced
and sang with riders performing their individually created tests hoping that they would grab the attention of Kyle,
Mike, Hilda and Tiffany to win the prizes. Music again this year ranged from Fergie to classical with a little
Disney mixed in! Four jeweled brow bands were awarded to the surprise of the recipients.
Tuesday and Wednesday began the dressage and jumping with all riders lessoning at least twice a day, some with
several horses just rode all day! In the evenings we had helmet fitting seminar hosted by Charles Owens, a nutrition
seminar hosted by Seminole Feed, and swimming. All riders got to weigh their horse and a competition was held at
dinner to see who could guess the weight of three horses. Prizes were, of course, awarded to who ever got the closest
to the actual weight.
The riders were never bored. However, we were beginning to see a little wear and tear on the trainers and adults.
Somehow, the kitchen angels never slowed down, presenting to us the most amazing food three times a day for which
we were all so grateful.
On the last day, after hours of riding on Pine Top Farms exceptional cross country course, the week culminated with
the Thursday evening Cattle Roundup Party hosted by Glen Wilson (mounted on his horse Moose) and his lovely wife,
Janet. The evening was full of music and awards. Many prizes were awarded thanks to all the wonderful contributors
for this year. No camper was left empty handed!
A Big Thank-You to all the parents that volunteered for the week. Our gratitude to Glenn and Janet Wilson for
supporting all these talented young people and a special thanks for the use of their very special Pine Top Farm
for another year of making memories and dreams at the 2007 Area III Young Rider Summer Camp.
See you all at Camp next year ? be safe and have fun until then!

August 5, 2007 -
Today is the final day of the competition. All the girls looked beautiful in their jog out outfits this morning. All
our horses passed the jog with no problems. They will each do a short hack this morning and then get ready for
show jumping. Wish us luck for 5 double clear rounds!
I have to check out of the hotel so this ends my internet connection until I get home. Check the USEA website for
final standings - and we will send out our final notes and some pictures the first of the week. It has been a
wonderful experience again this year. Riders and horses take home so much new knowledge of the upper level of
this sport. I highly recommend that all young riders strive for this competition. I also think that any young
rider riding at the training or preliminary level would greatly benefit from grooming at NAYRC. It is hard work,
but also a lot of fun. Get ready for Colorado next year!
August 4, 2007 -
Cross Country Day! The course, designed by David O?Connor was beautiful.
The grooms and Karla were out early this morning picking out the best spots and setting up the vet boxes. The grooms
worked diligently together. Each groom and parent had a place and a job and everyone stuck to the plan. It went
like clock work! Kyle commented afterwards that it was the best job ever.
Our first riders out were the CCI** team with Kirsten Selvig leading the pack. Kirsten and Rocket went double
clear as expected. Kirsten is currently placed in 4th with a score of 59.6. Next out was Georgia and Delta. The
pair also had a beautiful double clear run with a score of 61.8 and a placing at 7th. Our last team member out
was Kate Luce with a clear round and 1.6 in time. She finished today with a 61.4 and in 6th place. The Area
III/Area X team is currently placed in 2nd with a combined score of 182.8. First place is Area IV/Area II with 180.2.
The individual first place score is 50.4. This is so close that Sunday a rail can make the difference.
Unfortunately, the day did not go as well for the CCI* team. Last evening brought some tough decisions for Seth, Kyle
and the owners of Molto Bravo. Due to some minor swelling in his leg, they decided it would be best to not run
the cross country and risk further injury to the leg. The decision was made to withdraw. With Seth out they were
now a three person team with no drop score option. Our first pair out was Liz and Selina. They successfully went
double clear and are currently in 20th with a 62.9. Missy and Rowdy, had a really good cross country round going
but, unfortunately, took a jump out of order and were eliminated. Tyler and Rudy were the last pair out. They
also went double clear finishing the day in 5th on 51.9. Unfortunately, the team is out of the running and is
currently sitting in 8th place. The individual first place score is a 48.1. While they were disappointed the
four riders banded together and supported one another. ?It was an unbelievable morning with 5 clear runs and
only 1.6 in time!? reflected Kyle on the events of the day.
All the horses are recovering nicely from the run this morning. Each of the horses seemed to enjoy the water and
the attention as they were cooled down in the vet box. The grooms seemed to enjoy the same with a water fight
after the last horse was done. Buckets of water were flying everywhere as they all chased around and enjoyed
the cool water. The burst of energy made it hard to believe that they had been up since 5 AM and had worked non stop
through the morning. Back in the barn shoes were checked and fluids were flowing. Legs were iced. Grooms and
riders were taking turns with stop watches and keeping the proper leg in the bucket of water. As the afternoon
wound down so did the riders and grooms. The barn was very quiet as everyone napped and took care of the horses.
After a mock jog for Kyle and our vets, all the horses were ready for feed and an evening of rest.
The riders and families were all treated to a cook out at the Gibbes? RV. The CCI** girls walked the show jumping
course with Kyle. Another day had gone like clockwork. One day left.
August 3, 2007 - Hello All:
It is hard to believe that we are already into the second day of the competition. Time is flying - partly because
we are so busy and partly because we are having so much fun! The CCI* team rode dressage today. Everyone looked
fantastic and things ran as smooth as silk this morning. Our CCI* team is Liz Zerkus, Seth Tousey, Missy Miller
and Tyler Frey.
Liz, is from Fayetteville, Georgia and is here on her Holsteiner/Thoroughbred mare Roselina. At 6 years old,
Roselina is the youngest horse at the competition this year. Liz has just completed her first college classes
this summer at Georgia State University. She is a proud member of the Wayfarer Eventing team riding with Emma
and Mike Winter. She attended the first YRAP Summer camp in 2003 and returned to Poplar Place for YRAP camp in
2004 and 2005. She rode on the 2003 Area Team Challenge Novice Team and came to NAYRC last year for the CCI* on
her New Zealand Thoroughbred, Satori. Liz and Selina placed 2nd this spring at the Ocala CCI*, 9th place at the
Poplar Place CIC*, 4th in the preliminary division of the Ocala Winter Horse trials, Pine Top Thanksgiving and
November Poplar Place. This fall Liz will juggle college and competing Selina at the Preliminary level and
Selina?s sister Chloe at Beginner Novice.
Missy Miller is back at NAYRC this year riding her 11 year old Thoroughbred/Connemara gelding, Leprechaun?s Rowdy
Boy. This is Missy?s 3rd NAYRC as a rider with an impressive individual 4th place in 2005. Missy has had an exciting
season competing three horses at the preliminary level with a 2nd place finish at Red Hills, the highest placed
Young Rider at Bromont finishing in 7th, a 3rd place finish at the Lost Hounds Horse Trails, 1st place finish
at Rocking Horse III, 2nd place at Rocking Horse II, 3rd Place at Rocking Horse I, and 4th place at the Ocala
Winter Horse Trials. Missy, 18 years old, is from Gulf Shores, Alabama and graduated this spring from Bayside
Academy. She plans to ride full time next year with her trainer, Darren Chiacchia. She participated in the
YRAP summer camp in 2004 and 2007. She also groomed for Area III at the 2004 NAYRC.
Tyler Frey is at her first NAYRC. She is riding her 11 year old Thoroughbred gelding, Rudolfo. Tyler is 17 years
old and will be a senior this fall at Daphne High School. She has been a working student for Jim Graham and
currently rides with Hilda Donahue. Tyler has taken dressage lessons since she was 7 years old from Dorothy
Maxfield and was excited that she was here to see her dressage test this morning. She would like to thank both
Hilda and Jim, without them she doesn?t think Rudy would be jumping. She has attended YRAP summer camps in 2004-2007
and place individually in 2nd place on the Area III 2006 Preliminary Team Challenge Team. This season Tyler
place 7th at the Rocking Horse III, 4th at Rocking Horse II and 13th at Rocking Horse I at the Preliminary levels.
After NAYRC Rudy and Tyler plan to move up to Intermediate this fall.
Seth Tousey, 17 years old from Tryon, is riding at his first NAYRC. He is competing on a 10 year old, off the
track Thoroughbred gelding, Molto Bravo. Seth and Bravo have only been together since April but have bonded after
an impressive 5 events together. They placed 2nd at Fence, 3rd at River Glen and 9th at the CCI* in Virginia.
Seth has also ridden a successful season on his other mount Griffin X at the Intermediate level with a 5th place
at the May Poplar, 3rd place at River Glen and 3rd place at Pine Top Spring Trial. Seth will be a senior this
year at Keystone High School. He trains with Amy Barrington and Carol Bishop but is quick to note that there
are many riders who have helped him along the way. Seth attended the 2003, 2004 and 2007 YRAP summer camps and
was on the 2003 Area III Novice Team at Team Challenge.
Our riders had beautiful dressage rides with Seth scoring a 55.2, Liz a 62.9, Missy a 59.0 and Tyler a 51.9. The
team combined score is 166.1 placing them in 4th place. Area IV is in 1st place with a score of 157.4. With dressage
out of the way the team is focusing on Cross Country. Both the CCI** and CCI* teams are walking the course again
this evening with Kyle. Our day will start early in the morning with the hard working grooms setting up our vet
boxes at 5 AM. Our CCI** team will start first immediately followed by the CCI*. All riders are expected to be
finished by noon.
Once again our wonderful grooms have worked hard to make the days go smoothly. Our CCI* grooms are all at NAYRC
for the first time this year. Felicia is 17 years old from Kennesaw, Georgia where she will be a senior this year
at Harrison High. She will be moving her 6 year old Thoroughbred, Odyssey to Preliminary at Poplar Place this
September. She has participated in the Area III YRAP summer camp in 2006 and 2007. She also rode on the 2006
Area III Novice team at Team Challenge where she finished 2nd individually. She has been selected to ride on
the 2007 Area III Team Challenge Team this fall. Emily Renfroe, from Daphne, Alabama, will be a junior at Daphne
High School. Emily and her 14 year old Thoroughbred, Chaps, will be riding for Area III on the Preliminary team
at Team Challenge this fall. She has attended the 2006 and 2007 YRAP summer camp. Sam Johnston from Griffin, Georgia
will be a junior this year at Spalding High School. He is currently competing his 7 year old Irish Sport horse,
Benedict at training level. Mary Hollis Baird, 17 (or at least she will be in 20 days), is from Signal Mountain,
Tennessee. She will be a senior this year at Girl?s Prep School (GPS). She currently is competing at training level
on her 9 year old Thoroughbred, Slim Jim II. Mary Hollis has attended the 2006 and 2007 YRAP Summer Camps and
has competed for Area III on the 2006 Novice Team Challenge Team. She has been selected for the 2007 Area III Training
team at this fall?s 2007 Team Challenge.
Despite all the happenings of NAYRC, I would have to say the most important event of the week has to be the
celebration of Emily Renfroe?s birthday today. Happy Birthday Emily - but hope you didn?t expect the day off . . .
I would also like to note that there has been a bit of trickery as usual. A mystery person has decorated Kyle?s car
multiple times with signs and gooey substances. He may not admit it but he would miss it if the harassment stopped. . .
We would like to take a moment to say thank you to Hilda for the beautiful encouraging note and roses she sent to
the riders, thank you to Glen Wilson and Pine Top Farm for the use of the facility for our selection clinic and
the paddle with the Good Luck wishes inscribe and also to Dani Ditchting for the basket of horse treats for our
beloved horses. Thank you to all who have sent good wishes by email - they will be passed along to the riders!
August 2, 2007 - Hello Area III:
The competition has begun at the North American Young Riders Championship. Today our CCI** team rode dressage. Our
dressage arena is at the top of the hill behind the coliseum. The view and setting is beautiful. The weather today
was clear and pleasant. Our team is Kirsten Selvig, Georgia Gibbes and Kate Luce. We were able to round out our
team with a fourth rider, Brett Elise Handy and her mount Promising Sports Field. Brett is from Area X.
Kate Luce is back for her 4th NAYRC this year riding Tia Lusso. Tia Lusso is an 11 year old Hanoverian. While
this is Tia Lusso?s first NAYRC, Kate competed for the Area in the 2004 CCI*, the 2005 CCI** on her horse BellTrees
Sampras and the 2006 CCI** on Fox in Flight. Last year the Area III CCI**team won the Gold Metal. Kate has
trained with Darren Chiacchia for the last 4 years. Kate, a 20 year old, is from Mobile, Alabama and will be a
junior this year at Auburn University. Kate and Tia Lusso have had a good season, including a 1st place in
Intermediate at the 2006 Fork Gold Cup. She also placed first at the 2007 CIC*** at Red Hills on Fox in Flight. Her
plans after NAYRC include taking Fox in Flight to the CCI*** in Fair Hills this October. Kate is the Area III
Young Rider Representative.
Georgia Gibbes, from St. Matthews, SC, is 18 years old. She is riding the CCI** Championship on her 8 year old
Irish Sporthorse mare, Bounce Back. Georgia and Bounce Back competed last year on the Area III CCI* team. Georgia
competed successfully this season at the Intermediate level at Pine Top, Poplar and the Fork. The pair also had a
double clear run at the Ocala CCI** this past spring. Georgia will be a freshman at Auburn University this fall
and leaves immediately following the NAYRC competition for Rush. She plans to major in Business and Finance. Georgia
is such an inspiration to all and appreciates the opportunity to be here and hang out with everyone.
Kirsten Selvig and her partner Ruse de Guerre are from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Kirsten has finished her
freshman year at the University of South Carolina Honors College and will return this fall to start her Sophomore
year. This is Kristen?s 3rd NAYRC experience. She groomed in 2005 and was on the 2006 CCI* Championship team.
Kristen attended the 2005 and 2007 YRAP Summer Camp. Kristen proudly finished first at her first CIC** this year
held in May at the Virginia Horse Park. For those of you following the results online, the event staff has renamed
Kirsten ? she is now known as Selvia Kirsten.
The CCI** grooms, Katy Nichwander, Alaina Stumpf, Ginsie Britton and Lightsey Laffitte along with all the other
grooms had the riders and their mounts at the arena on time, beautifully turned out and ready to compete. Katy, 15
years old, is attending her 2nd NAYRC as a groom and has participated in every YRAP Summer Camp since 2003. She is
currently riding training level on Patrick her new Irish Thoroughbred. Ginsie has attended the YRAP summer camp
and rides training level on her paint mare Cat. Alaina, 15 years old, is new to young riders. She recently
acquired a new horse name Woody and we are all convincing her Eventing is the only way to ride. Lightsey is a
friend of Georgia?s from Columbia, South Carolina and is a Preliminary rider. She will be a freshman at Clemson
this Fall.
Our first rider out this morning was Brett who scored a 59.2. She was followed by Kirsten who scored a 59.6, Georgia
with a 61.8 and Kate with a 59.8. The team is currently placed 2nd with a combined score of 178.6 putting us behind
the Ontario/Alberta Team who has a total score of 162.2. With dressage over, the girls have turned their focus to
Saturday and the cross country. After the afternoon flat lessons for the CCI* team both groups walked the cross
country course with Kyle for the first time. Everyone was impressed with the course which has been designed by
David O?Connor.
Kyle, who has been most accommodating, is coaching for the sixth year. He brings great insight to the
competition. When asked about the dressage competition this morning he commented the markings were exceptionally
tough. He was pleased with our riders and felt there were good parts about every test. He is complementary about
the grooms, saying they are a fabulous group and the best ever.
Tonight riders and parents enjoyed the Mexican Fiesta Dinner and demonstrations in Vaulting and Reining.
Friday the CCI* team will ride dressage, there will be jumping lessons and the grooms will be getting ready
for a busy Saturday morning in the Cross Country vet boxes.
July 31, 2007 -
Hello to Area III from NAYRC at the Virginia Horse Park!
It is an exciting time and the young riders present want to let Area III know how proud they are to represent our
Area. This year we have two strong teams of horses and riders lead by a great group of adults. We appreciate all
the area has done to support these kids as many dreams have been realized as they travel the road to this exciting
competition. If you don?t know much about NAYRC, I encourage you to go to the website (www.youngriders.org) and
read about it. This year many of our competitors and grooms have come up through our YRAP (Young Rider Advancement
Program) which was designed to prepare the young rider for this team competition. They have all had a successful
competition season and have proved themselves to be the some of the best at their levels. They have raised money
and spent time preparing for this week and it is finally here.
The CCI** team is Kate Luce on Tia Lusso, Georgia Gibbes on Bounce Back and Kirsten Selvig on Ruse de Guerre. The
CCI* team is Liz Zerkus on Roselina, Missy Miller on Leprechaun?s Rowdy Boy, Tyler Frey on Rudolfo and Seth Tousey
on Molto Bravo. Once again Kyle Carter is successfully guiding our kids through the excitement and nerves of this
competition. We are also happy that Chris Newton is our team vet and is doing his best to keep all the horse in
top shape. We also must mention the wonderful organizational skills of our area Young Rider Coordinator and
Chef de Equip - Karla Nichwander.
Last week riders and grooms all attended a training session at the Bouckaert Farm in North Georgia. We would like
to take this opportunity to thank them for their wonderful hospitality and especially for Nathalie who jumped in and
gave dressage lessons while Kyle was returning from a competition in Rio - (for those of you that don?t know our
Coach Kyle attended the Pan Am games and came back with a Silver Metal and an individual 5th place.). The kids
trained hard last week but had time for some fun and a lot of bonding which included the annual shopping trip for
jog-out outfits and the white water rafting trip.
Karla and the grooms left on Sunday for the Virginia Horse Park in Lexington so they could get an early start on
setting up the stalls for the arrival of the horses and riders. This year our grooms include Young Riders Katy
Nichwander, Ginsie Britton, Mary Hollis Baird, Felicia Bradley, Emily Renfroe and Sam Johnston.
Check back for updates as the NAJYRC week progresses.

Andrew Harbison and Ralph Hill Clinic, Rocking Horse Stables, Florida, January 2007 -
For years I had heard about the Area III Adult Rider Clinic with Andrew Harbison and Ralph Hill. It was held
in Florida in late January each year and several friends had gone and raved about it. I was always a little
envious of them when they went and then when they returned and had so many great stories, well, it made me
want to go all the more. And this went on for a few years. I always thought that I wasn't ready or couldn't
justify the expense so soon after the holidays. And it's not like I didn't have the time available to take
off work, just the usual excuses.
Well this year I was even less ready but I decided that this way my year
to go! My horse and I had been off for nine months, we were just coming back into work, but I decided we were
going anyway. So my friend, Liz Heiden, and I made our plans, reservations and got ready. Now, any of you other
horse people will appreciate this, but my gelding, Connor, is an accident waiting to happen and wouldn't you
know the week before we were to leave, I bring him in from the pasture and he'd been acting the fool and sure
enough he had a nice gash just above the pastern. The vet was called and he had nine staples put in but the
vet said go, it isn't in a stress area. So we did go and am I ever glad we did.
Before our lay off, Connor and I had started having some stopping issues, both on cross country and stadium. So
we were having confidence issues with each other. So our goal for coming back was go back to basics and re-build
our skills and confidence in each other. So with that in mind, we loaded up, hauled over to Liz's house (she
has the bigger trailer) and headed to Florida on Thursday. We had a nice easy trip, got in at a fairly reasonable
hour and settled the boy's in and went to bed!
Fortunately our Dressage ride times weren't early so we didn't have to rush. The weather was great if a bit
cool. Liz and I decided to hack out a bit to loosen up the boy's and give me my first look at Rocking Horse. My
first ride, ever, with Andrew was great. He talked to me to find out what he'd be dealing with and we worked
on some great basics to get us going again. I think he thought me a little crazy when I asked if he had any
openings for another Dressage ride on Saturday. But, I wanted that weekend to be a jump-start for the two of us.
Andrew said he'd look at his schedule and let Robin know. That evening a group of us went to a local
eatery and had a great time (place cursor over picture for names). Robin told me that I could have an early ride time with Andrew and
I was thrilled. It was early enough for me to take more Motrin and rest prior to my afternoon session with Ralph.
I think Andrew thought me a glutton for punishment but he did what he could with us. What a great guy! We continued
our work from yesterday and there was improvement. I forgot to mention that there were two ladies there offering
massages, both human and equine and several of us got right in on that. What a life saver. Wanda Bibins did the
horses and was riding in my group for the Saturday and Sunday sessions. Liz and Cindy Phillips, both had their
horses worked on and all three of us had Sherry Lehmann, a friend of Wanda's, do chair massages. In fact, I had
one on both days and what a lifesaver that was.
After my dressage session with Andrew, I went to watch the tail end of the Prelim/Training group and got a
few pictures. It sort of gave you an idea what to expect for later in the day. We all did basically the same
gymnastic questions, just geared to our level. Karen Hudson got the award for jumping the highest, we all gasped
when we saw it. See for yourself in the picture I caught (click to enlarge). Just look at the top of the standard!
I had only ridden one other time with Ralph, when he did a clinic at Poplar Place and I remembered how tough it
had been. And it was just as tough this time, maybe tougher since we weren't nearly as fit as we needed to be. But
the questions he asked of us were progressive and it certainly helped build confidence, well, except when my
horse decided that instead of bouncing through the questions he'd take the second and third elements as one jump,
scared me to death but he learned and did it right the next time. I'd have to say it set us up for the Cross
Country session on Sunday.
I was able to go out and watch the Prelim/Training session because my group was the last of the day. That was
really fun to watch, as Ralph had them all start out with an exercise to see what their natural, comfortable
meters per minute was. Then he had them do a series of jumps building as he went. He paid attention and addressed
the needs of each horse and rider. It was a diverse group and he has a knack for addressing the individual. They
built up to the water complex and really tested them all. Unfortunately, I didn't get any good pictures.
My session ran a little later than originally scheduled because Ralph doesn't skimp when things need to be
addressed. But we all got started and made it through as it was getting dark. I have to say that my goal for
the weekend was achieved, my horse and I started the road back and the confidence he showed was great and I
trusted what Ralph asked and let my horse do his job. It certainly was worth the trip, money and time. And I
hope to be back for the next clinic.
Robin does such a great job organizing and running the Area III Adult Rider program. I encourage you to attend
the winter clinic if you haven't and hope to see you there next year.

Who I Am Makes A Difference
At each Chronicle of the Horse Adult Team Challenge (eastern, central and western) a trophy, the
Who I Am Makes a Difference,
sponsored by Kerrits horse clothing, is given to an Adult Rider competing at the ATC. The winner has to
be an adult rider, who has been the most positive, up-lifting person, giving their all to their Area Teams,
no matter when the chips are down, they rally on.
Congratulations to Anne Wilson the Area III recipient of this trophy. As one of her team members wrote,
"I am so proud . . . to be associated with someone like you who does care and goes out of her way to be
supportive and to help others. You are a TRUE TEAM PLAYER". Just recently, Anne was instrumental in
organizing and building awareness of the AHTF Debbie Atkinson fund.

August 6th -
AREA III CCI** TEAM TAKES THE GOLD MEDAL AND BECCA BARRON TAKES THE INDIVIDUAL
SILVER!
What an exciting way to end a great week or rather season. Yesterday the CCI*
Non Championship team wrapped up their competitions with at 4th place team finish and Andrea Leatherman, took
the individual bronze. It was so cool to see Andrea finish her Young Rider years in the medals. We will
miss you - but plan to see you around!
Today started with jogs for both Championship teams. All of the girls looked so
pretty and classic - the horses all were groomed to perfection! Everyone passed
the jogs with no difficulties. The CCI** team started showjumping on top of the
hill around 9 am. In reverse order the team mates waited for our girls to go.
Kate was the first in the ring going double clear ending with a 55.2 moving up
two places to an individual 6th place. Dana, also jumping double clear,
finished with a 52.5 maintaining her individual 4th place. Tension was high - we
all could see Gold for Area III. Becca and Oberon went into the ring and ran a
flawless run. At this point she had maintained her 51.5 and was in 2nd place.
The final rider Alexandra Zavoyna on her horse Merloch, went into the ring. We
all watch holding our breaths with one rail between her and Becca. She was
jumping beautifully and then Merloch tapped a rail. We watched – as a gasp went
out from the crowd, and in slow motion the rail left the cups went up in the air and came back down. . .landing in the
cups. Congratulations to Alexandra who went double clear and kept her 1st
place standing but Becca gave her a run for the money!! Earlier however, Area 2,
with whom we were tied took some rails. Our girls, the only 3 person team, all
finished on their dressage scores for a 1st place Team finish. There was an 11
point margin between 1st and Area 2’s second place. WAY TO GO GIRLS!
We are so proud of Becca who is aging out this year. You finished a very
distinguished Young Rider career in style. You will be greatly missed - but we
will look forward to seeing you as you cheer the future teams.
Next was the CCI* show jumping. Katie was our first rider out and the first
rider in the competition to go double clear. She was all smiles! Katie was one
of only 4 riders in have a double clear this show jumping round. Katie finished
with a 82.7 and an individual 19th place. After Katie’s clear round two rails
seemed to be our number. Sarah took 2 rails and had 1 time penalty for a
finishing score of 83.3 and 20th place. Dani took 2 rails and had no time for a
finishing score of 72.5 and 18th place. Georgia also took 2 rails with no time
for a 65.5 and 15th place. Our final rider Kirsten took two rails but no time
finishing with a 62.4 and 13th place individually. The team finished in 4th
place. The individual CCI* Gold went to Katelyn Mc Morris of Area IV who
finished with a 44.7 and the Team Gold went to her Area IV team.
With the riding complete, we all stood a distance from Kyle as we anticipated
our practical joking girls had to be up to some no good. As expected they
wheeled up in a golf cart loaded with a cooler and doused the beloved coach with
ice water . . .
We all scurried at the barn, pulling apart stalls and getting ready to load the
trailer for the trip home. There was a lot of packing and loading to be done.
At 1:30 we had to be in the Arena for the Award Ceremonies. The parents all sat
together in the Arena as the Area III team and Kyle marched out. Our Area
Banner and American Flag stood out in the crowd of participants. It gave you
goosebumps. Our CCI** girls looked awesome on the center of the podium as they
balanced ribbons and flowers and blankets for their horses. We cheered wildly
as they waved to the crowd. It was as it should be. . .Area III with the Gold!!!
Andrea and Becca also appropriately ended their Young Rider years standing on
the podium for the Bronze (Andrea CCI* Non Championship) and the Silver (Becca
CCI**). I would also like to note that Area III provided NAYRC with a first - as
our team mate Snippet joined the girls on the arena floor for the ceremony.
Snippet is reported to be the first dog to participate in the Award ceremonies. Snippet was well
behaved and did not get in trouble for being disruptive.
The Area III trailer was loaded, horse trailers were packed and around 4:00 we
started heading out in our different directions. It was a wonderful week. It
was great to develop friendship between riders who have competed together for
years and not known one another. Everyone was comparing their upcoming
schedules and planning to see one another again.
NAYRC is such a big deal. . . It
is the pinnacle of the Young Rider program and I encourage it to be a goal for
all our riders. If you are currently a Preliminary or "about to be Prelim" or above rider and are
interested in next year’s NAYRC - start planning to qualify now. Talk with your
riding instructor about a plan and if they need information have them call Karla
Nichwander. If you don’t have a regular instructor, don’t worry, contact
Karla, Kyle or any of our selectors. Their goal is to help you get there. If
you are a training level rider it is not to early to also plan your steps toward
NAYRC.
In the meantime prelim, training and novice riders can learn about being
on a team and the selection process by
participating on our Team Challenge teams. There is a Team Challenge training
session this weekend at Poplar Place Farm with Hilda Donahue (NAYRC selector and
Team Challenge Coach). If you would like to participate, contact Karla as soon
as possible. Contact information can be found below.
Congtratulations to all of our riders, grooms and support team who worked so
hard. Hard work paid off. We all had a wonderful experience and look forward
to future NAYRC events. Look for a photo album at the Young Rider tent during
selected Horse trials and on the area website. BUY AND SELL RAFFLE TICKETS!!!

August 5th -
AREA III CCI* NON CHAMPIONSHIP RIDER ANDREA LEATHERMAN FINISHES WITH A BRONZE AND THE TEAM TAKES 4TH PLACE
What an exciting day! Our Non Championship team wrapped up their competition today
with a jog out and show jumping. The beautiful course on top of the hill was the setting. Mariel and Myles to Go
jumped taking a few rails but still completing the course. Andrea jumped beautifully but took 2 rails moving her
to 3rd place. Over all the team took a 4th place. Chelsey joined her team mates in the ring for the ribbon
ceremony - but despite the cheering (or jeering) from the rest of the Area we could not get Chelsey to run the
victory gallop on foot. Tomorrow I will check the posted scoring and give you more exact details.
Earlier, the day started with the CCI** riders on the cross country course. Becca
and Oberon ran beautifully. Becca, being the talented rider that she is, rode Oberon through the water which
caused difficulties for many of the riders. She had a double clear ending the phase on her dressage score
of 51.5. She is currently placed in 2nd individually. Kate and Fox in Flight also had a beautiful go. The
spectators around our jump commented that she rode jump 7, a skinny table combination the most graceful of
all the riders. She also went double clear finishing on her dressage score of 55.2 and in 8th place individually.
Dana and Relentless Pursuit rode a double clear also finishing the phase on their dressage score and placing
individually in 5th place. The team is still tied for 1st place with Area 2. However, I would like to note
that our team is the only three man CCI** team – which means we have not had the advantage of dropping a score.
And for those of you trying to place odds. . .Becca is only 2.3 points out of 1st.
Immediately following the CCI** riders our CCI* Championship riders were on course.
Sarah Kezar was the first rider out. Canabrett Minstral kept everyone on their toes in warm up, but knows exactly
what his job is on the course. Sarah ran double clean and moved up with a 74.3 to 21st place. Shortly after
Sarah got off course Kyle was back at warm up with Georgia and Bounce Back. As always, Georgia was a true
professional on course and gave a beautiful run. She flawlessly took the first jump into the water and made
the S turn with no problem. Georgia went double clean with an end of the day score of 57.6 and a placing of 14th.
Dani and Marron Coin were the third pair on course. Dani has impressed us all with her calm demeanor and her
pure pleasure at just being at NAYRC. She is savoring every moment and has truly enjoyed the experience. Dani
went double clear with a score of 64.5 and a 19th place. Kyle was quickly back at warm up and working with
Katie Wimberly. Katie had a quick warm up and was out on course. Unfortunately Katie had a stop at the water, but
she recouped and got over the obstacle to complete the course with only .8 time faults. Her final score was 82.7 and
her placing was 22nd. Last on course was our anchor rider, Kirsten Selvig. Kristen, as always was cool and calm.
She is such a professional. As expect Kristen turned in a beautiful run and with only .4 time penalties she
finished with a 54.4 and 10th place. The team is placed in 6th.
Our grooms led by Brittany Kart deserve a big hand today. We really worked as a
team cooling the horses at the end of cross country as well as at the end of the warm up. We had the grooms,
parents and riders all working hand in hand to assure all our horses were taken care of. We had no horses
that had problems and all were quickly cleared by the vet to return to the barn. All legs and feet appeared
fine and team vet Chris jogged all horses this evening. If all continues through the night we should have
everyone performing well at tomorrow mornings jog out.
Both CCI** and CCI* will jog in the morning and follow with show jumping. The
awards ceremony will follow. It will be so exciting to sit in stands in the auditorium and watch the award
ceremony. . .Some of us will pack up and head home in the morning. Others will wait until Monday. It has been
a truly wonderful week. While we have been tired, through ups and downs, and hot — it has also been exciting, a
wrap up report will come later.
2006 NAYRC Team Profiles:
Katie Wimberly, from East Lake Weir, Florida and her horse Mountaindale are riding
in the CCI*Championships. Katie will be a freshman this fall at the University of Florida. She plans to major
in Business Administration and Animal Science. She works at a bead shop where she makes “high end’ jewelry - not
lanyard stuff. She is riding Mountaindale, a 14 year old thoroughbred gelding she has owned for 2 years. Katie’s
birthday is August 2 so she celebrates her 18th birthday at the competition. Katie came up the ranks through
Pony Club and has ridden dressage at local shows. She actually started riding very young - Katie was sitting
in the saddle in front of her mom at 4 months old. Katie has ridden with Jen and John Hollings and Michael Godfrey.
Her mom says that “horses are more important to her than boys…” Wonder what the boys think of that????
Amanda Carter is grooming at her second NAYRC. Known lovingly to her teammates
as “Miss Amanda Carter” she decided to come back again this year even after grooming in 2005. She must be
gluten for punishment. . . Amanda is from Adairsville, Georgia where she is a senior in high school this year.
Her plans are to be an Animal Nutritionist. Amanda has been an active Area III Young Rider and along with two
years of NAYRC grooming she has also attend 3 years of YRAP Summer Camp. Amanda rides Formal Ty, a 9year old
Thoroughbred gelding at Training level. She plans to ride at NAYRC in the near future. Amanda is grooming for
Kirsten and Katie.
Brittany Kart was our team manager this year. Brittany, who aged out of the program
last year, continues to volunteer and support Area III Young Riders. We are very lucky to have her experience,
guidance and expertise. For those of you that don’t know, Brittany was the 2002 CCI** Individual Gold Medal
Winner. Brittany worked really hard for our area. . .next time you see her at a horse trial be sure and give
her a big thank you.
Karla Nichwander is our Area YR Coordinator and Chef de Equip this year. Karla,
from Alpharetta, Georgia has been the Young Rider Coordinator for just about one year now. This was her
first NAYRC. She will tell you there has been so much to learn - from rules, to traditions and everything in
between. She did a wonderful job but can always use volunteer help. Please let her know if you would like to
help. Prior to being the coordinator, Karla was the 2005 Team Challenge Chef de Equip. Karla and her husband
Rick have two children, a son Ricky and a daughter Katie. Karla has done an incredible job cheering on the
riders and giving encouragement. Our great appreciation goes to Karla for a job well done at this year’s NAYRC.
August 4th - It is hard to believe how quickly the week is going by. Today was busy and as is
common in the sport - full of highs and lows. . .
The morning started with the CCI* Non Championship team doing Cross Country. We
were excited because our riders had early times which we thought would help with the heat. However, we didn’t
take into consideration the dew and the fog that rolled in and delayed the morning start by 30 minutes. Chelsey
and Cruise were our first team on course. Unfortunately, Cruise lost a shoe in the Steeplechase and took a
slip. Chelsey was a bit muddy - but was unhurt. Cruise was fine with the exception of a cut on his front
leg and with horse in mind, Chelsey retired. As always that is a heartbreaking decision but Chelsey, being the
ultimate sports woman that she is took in stride and considered it another character building experience.
Mariel, our scramble rider was next on course. She successfully completed the phase
with 1.2 time faults, and 20 jumping faults for a score of 98.6 and a placing of 15th. Her horse recovered with
out difficulty from the phase.
Andrea, our team anchor, was next out. She and Mensa had a beautiful go. Mensa
recovered quickly from each step. They looked wonderful on course. She had no time faults or jump penalties
completing the phase with a 53.9 jumping her up ten slots to a 3rd place. Second place has a score of 53.8
and first place is at 40.0 - putting Andrea in the running to move up on Saturday. With Chris and the help
of the grooms, Mensa cooled down and recovered nicely. Our team is placed 6th.
Our other Area III rider, Missy Miller, who was riding for Area IX/X had a rough day.
She successfully completed the steeplechase and the Roads and Track. However, she was sadly eliminated at the
corner which got so many of the riders. Reports are that Missy and Rowdy are both in good spirits, despite
the disappointment.
Starting before lunch, our first of five CCI* Championship riders started their
Dressage. All of our riders have looked wonderful in their top hats and tails. Our grooms had our horses well
turned out with beautiful braids and quartermarks. The Area can be proud of the well turned out professional
group of riders and horses. Our first rider was Sarah Kezar. Despite a disappointing Dressage go, Sarah looks
forward to the next jumping phases where she can make a bigger contribution to the team. Sarah scored a 74.3
placing her in 28th. Georgia Gibbes was the next rider to go from our team. Georgia rode beautifully and scored
a very respectable 57.6 and a placing of 15th. Our individual rider, Danielle Dichting and her horse Marron
Coin were the last morning ride. Dani and “Leo” rode a graceful ride to a score of 64.5 and a 24th placing.
After a lunch break the Dressage started again with Katie Wimberly riding
Mountaindale. Despite one error, Katie had a lovely ride and scored a 61.9 placing her in 22nd place. Our
final rider today was Kirsten Selvig riding Ruse de Guerre. As always, Kirsten performed beautifully and earned
a score of 54 and a placing of 11th. The team is place in 5th with a score of 173.5. The team from Ontario
is in first place.
The temperatures are hot here and we are sweltering - however, we are all having
a great time. There are so many friendships being made and we have great team spirit. Our girls are very
good representatives of Area III. Despite the hard work, we are also having fun. The girls have really
enjoyed watching the show jumping, parties and team dinners. The Young Riders are still selling raffle
tickets since the raffle has been extended to November. They have worked hard and represented you well - please
consider purchasing raffle tickets if you haven’t already. I will also say again that if you are a Young
Rider - you really need to be making your plans now to qualify and be here in the future.
Our CCI** riders did not ride today. They will start early in the morning with
Cross country. Our CCI* Championship cross country will follow. “Boogie right along girls. . .” Tomorrow
afternoon, the CCI* Non championship team will jog and then show jump starting at 5:00. It will be a
long day - but I will let you know how it turns out.
2006 NAYRC TEAM PROFILES:
Kirsten Selvig and her partner Ruse de Guerre are from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Kirsten will be a freshman this fall at the Univerisity of South Carolina Honors College. She plans to
continue eventing while at school. This is Kristen’s 2nd NAYRC experience. She groomed in 2005 and is on
the 2006 CCI* Championship team. Kristen attended the 2005 YRAP Summer Camp. Kristen proudly finished 2nd this
year at her first CCI* in Ocala and would like to thank John Hollings for his help there. Kristen is the
points leader in the USEA Junior Prelim division. Kristen’s best friend Snippet, a Jack Russell, has become
a Young Rider Team Member as he has attended both NAYRC and the YRAP summer camp.
Danielle Dichting at 16 is the Area’s youngest rider this year. She rides Marron
Coin an 13 year old Irish Sport Horse gelding also known as Leo. Dani began eventing in England where she
and her family lived until 2004. They now reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Dani has been very active in the
Area III Young Riders. She attended the YRAP 2005 Summer Camp and was on the 2005 YRAP Team Challenge Training Team.
She is very excited to be representing Area III as an Individual rider in the CCI* Championship. Dani’s
enthusiasm is an inspiration to everyone. She is always so happy and excited to be here. Who knew anyone
could be so excited about getting the saddle rack closest to the ground. While Dani is the most petite of the
riders - we expect her Young Rider career to be anything but “short and sweet”.
Liz Zerkus from Fayetteville, Ga is here at her first NAYRC with her New Zealand
Thoroughbred gelding Satori. Liz is a high school senior this year. She is member of the Wayfarer Eventing
team riding with Emma and Mike Winter. She will be a working student for them as soon as she returns home
from NAYRC. She would like to thank them for all the support they have given her that enabled her to accomplish
this goal. Liz worked as a groom for Stephen Bradley and Wendy Lewis at Fox Hall for 3 years. NAYRC has
been in Liz’s plan since she joined Area III Young Riders as a novice rider in 2003. She attended the first
YRAP Summer camp in 2003 and returned to Poplar Place for camp in 2004 and 2005. She rode on the 2003 Area
Team Challenge Novice Team. Liz is excited to finally be at NAYRC representing our Area but also looks forward
to being here in the near future on her 5 year old Thoroughbred/Warmblood mare Roselina.
Katie Nichwander from Alpharetta, Georgia is at her first NAYRC this year as a
groom. Katie is 14 years old. She is the owner of the beloved horse “Buck a Little More” or also known as
Cappy. Cappy is 13 years old and has taken Katie to training level. However, this summer Katie has
partnered with a new guy named Noah. Noah is a 9 year old Thoroughbred gelding which Katie fully plans to
bring to NAYRC in the near future. She has been working hard keeping Dani and Liz straight.
August 3d - Hi!!!
First, I would like to thank everyone who has sent good luck messages to our Area III team! It has meant so much to
our riders to know that they are being supported by the Area.
Today was exciting as the CCI** team rode Dressage and ended the day tied for first place. Becca and Kate scrambled
with Dana Widstrand from Area I who was riding Relentless Pursuit. Becca Barron and Oberon had a phenomenal ride
scoring a 51.5 putting the pair in 3rd place. Kate and Fox in Flight had a beautiful go pulling a score of 55.2
and 10th place. Dana and Relentless Pursuit had a superb ride scoring 52.5 and a 5th place. Again, I would
like to repeat that they are currently in FIRST PLACE (ok, tied for first with Area II but we can take them. . )
All the CCI** and the CCI* Championship riders walked the course with Kyle while
the Non Championship riders went over the Steeplechase and their course with Mike. All the riders seem excited
about their courses. Dani and Kirsten described the CCI* Championship course as a “big gallopy course with
lots of terrain and hills with fly fences but with less technical questions than expected.” Chelsey and Andrea
felt differently about the CCI* Non Championship course describing bounces, a coffin complex and other
technical questions. Kate noted that the CCI** course looked like a lot of fun. The common advise given
to all the riders was to “Rock and Boogie”.
Missy Miller, an Area III Young Rider, is also riding in the CCI* Non Championship
this year on her horse Leprechaun’s Rowdy Boy. Unfortunately, due to her competition and training schedule
she was unable to attend the mandatory Area III selection clinics and training sessions – and was unable to
ride for our Area. However, she is riding on a team for Area IX and X. She had a lovely dressage ride yesterday
scoring a 56.8 and placing 19th. Her team is currently placed in 6th. While we are sorry that Missy was unable
to ride with us - she is still one of us and we wish her the best of luck this week.
Tomorrow our CCI* Championship girls ride Dressage and the CCI* Non Championship
girls ride cross country. It will be a very busy day for the grooms who will be working the cross country boxes
and getting others for Dressage. The CCI** girls have the day off to prepare for cross country on Saturday.
Tomorrow will be a hectic but exciting day. . . I look forward to letting you know what’s going on.
On a side note - it was noted by several of the girls that Kyle actually admitted
that he does care about the girls. . .we knew it. . .
2006 NAYRC Team Profiles:
Sarah Kezar from Irondale, Alabama, is riding in her second NAYRC. She and Canabrett Minstrell her 8 year old
Thoroughbred competed on the CCI* non championship team in 2005 and are on the CCI* Championship team this year.
She is proud to have completed two Intermediate horse trials this past season at Poplar Place and finishing 4th
at River Glen. She has been a working student this summer for Bouchaert Farms. She would also like to
recognize Brian Tweed and Mark and Mimi Combs for helping her along the way. Sarah also participated in the YRAP
Summer Camp 2004, 2005 and 2006. Sarah will be a freshman this year at UVA where she plans to major in
Biomedical Engineering. Sarah has had many unusual horse riding experiences which have resulted in the loss
of her sense of smell..??? While she is kind to her teammates while awake is tends to threaten people in her
sleep. . . She uses hypnosis cd’s before she competes - perhaps she should use them before bed time as well!
Georgia Gibbes, from St. Matthews, SC, is a 17 year old high school senior. She is
riding the CCI* Championship on her 8 year old Irish Sporthorse mare, Bounce Back. Georgia qualified on two
horses however, Gary Owen was unable to attend the party this year due to slight lameness. Georgia has worked
for two summers with Bonnie Mosser and Bonnie has wintered with the Gibbes for the past two seasons. This is
Georgia’s first NAYRC although it has been in her plans for the last three years. Georgia is true pleasure to
be around and is fondly known as never being serious. Most phrases are followed by “just kidding”. Despite
her practical joking, she has made many profound statements to inspire her teammates including “You can do anything
as long as you have a smile on your face. . .” She has also been quoted as saying “I am so very happy to be
here with such a promising group of young ladies.” She is lovingly known to her teammates as GAG and will
dance-with or without music. . .
Noelle Boex from Cleveland Ohio is grooming this year for Sarah Kezar and Georgia
Gibbes. Noelle graciously agreed to groom for our area when asked by her friend Sarah. Noelle is in the South
because she is a sophomore at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Sarah and Noelle met when they
both trained with Mark and Mimi Combs. Noelle is working with racehorses these days. She came up through the
ranks of Pony Club where she represented her region at the Show Jumping Championships placing a very
respectable 4th and 5th place. Noelle rides Prelim on an 8 year old Thoroughbred mare named War Goddess. We
welcome her to our Area and greatly appreciate her willingness to jump in help not only her friend but
the entire Area Team.
August 2nd - Hello, Area III !!!
We are well on our way to a great competition. Our CCI* non championship riders
did dressage today. Chelsey went first and scored a respectable 58.2 placing her in 21st. Mariel rode next
earning a score of 56.4 putting her in 17th. Andrea completed the team with a 53.9 securing the 13th position.
The combined team score was 168.5 putting the team in 7th place. This group has tomorrow off and will continue
the competition on Friday with Steeplechase, Cross Country and Roads & Track.
The CCI** and CCI* Championship teams had horse inspections today. Both Kate Luce
and Becca Barron passed jogs. It was a tense moment when Kate and Fox in Flight were held for reinspection - but
everything turned out ok and they passed. The CCI* group was not as lucky. Unfortunately, on the way to the
jog Liz’s horse, Satori, stepped on a rock and was not sound to jog. At the end of the training session last
week, Liz had some concerns about Satori’s jog for the team vet and after a discussion with Kyle she decided to
step down from the team and go as an individual. Because of her concern for the team and making the difficult
decision, we will still continue the competition with a four female team and one individual. Katie Wimberly,
first alternate moved onto the team. The other riders went without problems although Sarah Kezar and
Canabrett Minstrell did a bit of bucking and dancing down the jog track. Liz has decided to stay on Lexington
and groom for her teammates.
Our grooms were busy today keeping up with dressage riding and jog outs. All our
riders and horses looked so professional and well turned out. They are representing the Area well.
The evening ended with the annual Table Decoration Party. Each Area or Country
decorates a table to represent their team. We decided it would be the perfect opportunity to give Kyle a baby
shower. So we decked everything in pink and presented Kyle with gag and real baby gifts. . .they included bibs,
blankets, towels. . .Barbie dolls, bratz dolls, a Mardi Gras starter kit and a special diaper bag for
Kyle (a stocked cooler). I think these girls are preparing him well for fatherhood. . .
Tomorrow brings Dressage for the CCI** and the arrival of assistant coach Mike
Winter. The CCI* Championship rides dressage on Friday. I’ll keep you posted on the events tomorrow.
2006 NAYRC Team Profiles:
Becca Barron, from Monticello, Florida, is at her 4th NAYRC. She is teamed with
her 9 year old Dutch Warmblood Oberon to ride the CCI** this year. She started in 2001 riding for the
Area III CCI* team on Joker, in 2002 she returned as a groom, she and Oberon represented the area in 2005
in the CCI**. Becca has been riding Oberon for 3 years and ran their first Advance trial this year at The Fork.
Becca is a senior this year at Hollins Univerisity where she is majoring in Business Finance. Aside from her
riding skills, Becca’s team mates give her a “must see and two thumbs up” on her Michael Jackson dance moves.
It seems her favorite is “Man in the Mirror”. Becca is always on the top of her game and a wonderful inspiration
to the younger team members. Becca is 21, which means she is aging out of the Young Rider program. She will
be greatly missed - but her like her older sister Elizabeth, I am sure we will see her back grooming for little sis Anne.
Kate Luce is back for her 3rd NAYRC this year riding her 17 year old Irish
Thoroughbred Fox in Flight. Kate also competed for the Area in the 2004 CCI*, the 2005 CCI** on her horse
BellTrees Sampras. She also competes on Tia Lusso. Kate and Tia won the Intermediate division at The Fork
this past April. Kate has trained with Darren Chiacchia for the last 4 years. Kate, a 19 year old, is
from Mobile, Alabama and is a sophomore at Auburn University. She plans to major in Business. Kate is
known to her teammates as a light sleeper. . .she loves hot fudge. Kate’s teammate GAG comment that she is
always well turned out, never frazzled and someone to look up to. Kate would like to thank her horse for
teaching her how to do this.
Anne Barron is grooming for her 4th year. She has been an active Young Rider
for years participating in clinics and the Area III 2005 summer camp. She groomed for sisters Becca and
Elizabeth in 2001, Elizabeth in 2002, Becca in 2005 and Becca and Kate in 2006. Anne is from Monticello,
Florida where she is a high school senior. She is 18 years old and received Jack as a late birthday gift
this past May. Jack is a 10 year old gray Thoroughbred cross who she will start eventing this fall.
All I can say is get ready Becca and Elizabeth - you will be grooming for Anne at NAYRC soon and payback
is. . .well you know. Anne is also the proud rider of Courageous her beloved quarter horse who has never
taken a lame step. Anne and Courageous also plan to be eventing this fall.
August 1st - Hello, Area III !!!
After all our hard work getting qualified and selected, after a fun but intense training session at Boucheart Farm,
we are finally here at NAJYRC! You can’t even begin to describe the feeling here - it is excitement, anticipation,
nervousness - but it all adds up to knowing you have accomplished something and have made it to the top of the
Young Rider experience! You can tell this is BIG - and I can’t encourage other Young Riders enough to make this
your goal.
Our CCI* non championship riders got started today with jog outs. Both horses and riders looked very professional
and passed with out problem. Chelsea Adams and Andrea Leatherman will represent our area on a scramble team
with Area I rider Mariel Cabot. Mariel, from Wenham, Massachusetts, is 18 years old and has just graduated
from High School. She is riding her 12 year old Thoroughbred gelding Myles To Go who has been her partner for
about a 1 ˝ years. Mariel and Myles won the YR Preliminary Division at the Millbrook, NY Horse Trial this year.
This is her first NAYRC. We welcome Mariel to our team! This group will be doing Dressage on Wednesday - I’ll
keep you posted on the results.
The other riders had lessons today with Kyle. They are doing the last minute polishing and getting their
horses use to the surroundings. Kyle is very excited about this year’s group and fully expects to see metals.
Kyle encourages team work and has prepared the riders for the responsibility of being on a team. He has
really pulled all the riders together and we see ourselves as one group - Area III. They are all riding for
each other - as well as for the Area III members. On Wednesday the CCI** and CCI* Championship riders will jog.
The grooms led by Brittany Kart are doing an incredible job. They complete our team and are invaluable. They
are working so hard but seem to be having great fun too. Our barn area is by far the most impressive.
We wish you could all be here but would really appreciate your support. Each day we will be sending out updates,
pictures and profiling members of our team - start planning for next year because you want to be here!!!!
2006 NAYRC TEAM PROFILES:
Andrea Leatherman, from Rock Hill, South Carolina, is riding Mensa on our CCI* non championship team. Mensa
is an 8 year Thoroughbred that came off the track. Andrea and Mensa have been together for about 3 years now.
This is Andrea’s 4th NAYRC. She also rode her horse Yoshi for Area III in the CCI* in 2001 and 2002 as well
as the CCI** in 2003. Andrea trains with Tiffany Loudon. She is a senior at the University of South
Carolina Honors College where she is majoring in Psychology and pre-Med. Andrea is very smart - however her
team mates will caution you to tell her jokes slowly. . . and you will probably need to explain them. Andrea
is 21 years old so this is her last year as a Young Rider. She has brought great poise and experience to
this year’s team. She will be missed as young rider but we will continue to see her at area horse trials.
Chelsea Adams is riding Cruise in Style in the CCI* non championship team. Cruise is a 9 year old Australian
Thoroughbred. He and Chelsea have been together for a year now. Chelsea is from Covington, LA where she is a
senior in High School this year. She is 17 years old. Chelsea has been an active Area III Young Rider by
participating in the Area III Young Rider Summer Camp at Poplar Place Farms in 2004 and 2005. She represented
Area III Young Riders at Team Challenge in 2004 at Novice and 2005 at Training. Chelsea was a groom at
the 2005 NAYRC. Since getting her driver’s license a year ago, she probably wins the award for the putting
the most mileage on her truck and trailer that is fondly known as Tucker and Bertha. Another interesting
tidbit that her team mates shared about Chelsea is that she can fit her entire driver’s license in her mouth. . .hummm.
Lexie Holdbrooks is here this year as a groom. She is a 15 year old sophomore from Decatur Alabama. Lexie
attended Area III YRAP Summer Camp this year with her horse Go Bragh’s Gap, a 6 year old Thoroughbred/Connemara cross.
She is riding novice level. Lexie’s goal is to ride at NAYRC for our area and she felt that grooming would be a
good way to get started. She is having a great time grooming for Chelsea and Andrea. She says, “They are
both great and easy to groom for”. Chelsea and Andrea have found her help invaluable and say she is doing a great job.

Summer Camp 2006 -
Our Summer Camp began immediately after Area III Championships ended at the beautiful Poplar Place Farm in
Columbus, Georgia. We had 30 campers scurrying to move their horses from the temporary stalls to the show barn
as the workers started to take them down. This became a real team building event! We also got a brief insight
as to what Donna Stegman faces prior to the start of a show - stall assignments (whew!) - glad it is her not me
and I promise Ill never ask to move my stall again.
The next morning all the excitement began as riders competed in the
Musical Dressage Competition. Each rider chose his/her own music and choreography and as you can imagine
none of us were disappointed in the show. The horses and riders danced across the arena to music both serious
and funny; ranging from rap to classical to a song about a lazy pirate. Beautiful, sparkling brow bands
were awarded to the winners.
Trainers Kyle Carter and Hilda Hicks Donahue arrived Monday evening and
spoke to the campers after dinner. Mike Winter (recently injured at Jersey Fresh days before!) arrived ready
to work on Tuesday morning. The next 3 days were action packed; the campers rode twice a day under the
guidance of our much respected trainers. Stadium jumping, dressage were done each day, ending with
Cross-country on Thursday. We had evenings of relaxation and socializing. One evening was spent at our
Country Hoe Down hosted by Karla Nichwander (our YR Coordinator). The evening included wonderful food,
games, relay races and THE DUNKING BOOTH. Yes, Kyle and Hilda were good sports as they were dunked by the
Young Riders seeking revenge from the days of hard work. Mike used the collar bone excuse, maybe we will get
him next year!
On the last day, after hours of riding on Poplar Place’s exceptional
cross country course, the YR’s spent the afternoon at Callaway Gardens swimming and enjoying all the new friends
they had made. The evening was full of music and awards. Many prizes were awarded thanks to all the wonderful
contributors this year. No camper was left empty handed!
Big Thank-yous to all the parents that volunteered for the week. Gratitude
to Donna and Gary Stegman for supporting all these talented young people and special thanks for the use
of their very special Poplar Place Farm for another year of making memories and dreams at the 2006
Area III Young Riders Summer Camp.
See you next year! Jacqueline Carter and Colleen Zaic, Co-Directors
